Understand your network check

Ping: measure reachability

Ping sends small ICMP probes. Compare successful replies and average response times across locations. Some networks block ICMP while their websites work normally, so combine a failed ping with an HTTPS or TCP test before concluding that a host is down.

HTTPS: check the website response

The test requests the HTTPS homepage from external probes. A 2xx response indicates success; 3xx is a redirect. A 4xx or 5xx response needs context and does not always mean the entire server is unavailable. This is an on-demand check, not continuous uptime monitoring.

TCP and UDP: check a service port

Choose one port, such as 443 for HTTPS or 53 for DNS. A TCP connection confirms network reachability, not that the application is healthy. UDP often stays silent: no reply cannot reliably distinguish an open port, a closed port and packet filtering.

DNS: compare regional answers

The probes resolve IPv4 and IPv6 addresses from their own locations. Different answers can be normal for CDNs and geographic routing. After a DNS change, account for record TTLs and caches. Use the DNS health report to inspect zone and mail configuration in more detail.
